STOGUMBER

The Village of Stogumber

For those looking to escape the busier tourist hotspots, Somerset is a true hidden gem of the West Country - a county of rolling hills, dramatic coastline and unspoilt countryside.

At its heart lies the ancient and welcoming village of Stogumber, nestled between the breathtaking Quantock Hills and the wild beauty of Exmoor. Perfectly positioned, Stogumber offers the best of both worlds: peaceful rural charm, yet easy access to the nearby towns of Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead, as well as the coast at Watchet.

Steeped in history, Stogumber’s story stretches back thousands of years. Excavations have uncovered Iron Age artefacts, and there was an established settlement here in Anglo-Saxon times. By the early 16th century, the village had become a thriving wool town along the trade route to the ancient port of Watchet, with West Country wool highly prized across the country. The village was also once known for its own brewery, producing beer until its closure in 1912 - the building is now a private home.

Today, Stogumber is a friendly and close-knit community, surrounded by miles of gently rolling farmland, winding lanes and footpaths just waiting to be explored. Walkers and cyclists can head straight from the village into the Quantock Hills or towards Exmoor, discovering panoramic views, woodland trails and abundant wildlife along the way. The village itself offers historic buildings, a beautiful medieval church, a traditional pub and a strong sense of rural Somerset life.

Stogumber boasts its own beautiful station on the West Somerset Railway, 20 miles of heritage railway through stunning West Somerset countryside and coast.

Whether you’re seeking scenic walks, heritage and history, quiet country lanes, or simply a slower pace of life, Stogumber is a wonderful base from which to explore this special corner of Somerset.

You can find out more about village life and upcoming events by visiting Stogumber’s own website.
